Off the Grid

Living off-grid for several years changed how I think about life cycles. Planting my first garden taught me that we aren't meant to be in constant bloom - nourishment, growth, and endings all have their place. This lesson echoed through my recovery from a brain injury and resulting depression, where I learned to embrace patience and self-compassion. Slowing down was the hardest part. For days, all I could manage was drinking water. Once I was hydrated, my body wanted food. Once I was eating, my brain started working again. It was painfully slow, but it was exactly what I needed. These experiences started to reshape how I think about productivity and rest. We treat recharging as weakness, but it's what allows us to return to full capacity and function at our best.
